What You'll Do:
Translate the hopes and dreams of would-be business owners and those looking for refinancing into cold, hard facts. A business plan must lay out the guts of the operations--how much money is needed, how it will be spent, how revenue will be generated at what levels and on what schedule.
Skills You'll Need:
A background in business development, financing or accounting is a must. Business plan writers must be able to understand financial statements, make sales and income projections and write clearly and succinctly. You must also be able to provide market research and develop positioning statements. Networking skills are key, both to find clients and to help them find sources of financing if need be.
Equipment You'll Need:
A computer, modem, printer and fax are must-haves. You might want to invest in business-plan software, as well, which will provide you with templates for the plans you write. Professional business stationery and cards are very important, as is an office set up in which you can meet and work with clients.
Start-up costs:
$2,500 for the computer, modem and printer. A fax machine will run you $300; the software, $100. Cards and stationary will add another $100 to your tally. A basic, but decent, desk and chair will run you at least $600.
Potential Income:
Business plan writing can generate between $20,000 and $100,000, depending on your locale and type of clientele. Fees generally range from $2,000 to $5,000 per plan, depending on the amount of research and analysis required.
