Work It Out

There was a time when you could never wear shorts to work (unless you waitressed at Hooters), but shorts have gotten sophisticated over the years, says Joanna Manganaro, women's editor of Stylesight.com, a fashion trend site. "Short suits are quickly becoming a new alternative to the skirt. They have recently emerged on the runways, and are a perfect way to give shorts a professional edge," she says. To pull them off, Manganaro recommends looking for longer hemlines, high-quality fabrics and feminine design details. For instance, she says, "pleated styles with mid-thigh to just-above-the-knee lengths work well," as do scalloped hemlines and self-belts for a chic touch. Tip: You can even wear them in the fall; just add hosiery.
