We all think our dogs are the cutest, but what about taking pride in pooches who aren’t so easy on the eyes? 29 dogs competed for the top honor at this year’s World’s Ugliest Dog® Contest, an annual competition that takes place at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California.
First place prize was awarded to an 8-year-old Chinese crested with the most perfect name: Mugly. The hairy pooch, who hails from across the pond, shared the award spotlight with owner Bev Nicholson. Mugly had already won “Britain’s Ugliest Dog” top award back in 2005, so this latest award really is a crowning achievement.
"I couldn't speak when they announced Mugly's name," said Nicholson. "I didn't know which way to look. I was shaking as much as the dog."
Along with a trophy and a cash prize of $1,000, the rescue dog will win a photo shoot, a year’s supply of dog cookies and a VIP stay at the Sheraton hotel in Petaluma. Mugly’s win marks another victory for the Chinese crested breed. Last year’s winner, Yoda, was a Chinese crested Chihuahua mix.
Maybe it’s just us, but we don’t see ugly when we look into Mugly’s eyes. What do you think? Does Mugly deserve the top prize or would you have chosen one of his competitors: Handsome Hector, Creature or Spam-O-Rama?
