As a man, I am sometimes confused by the terminology and rationale surrounding women's fashion. I know there are "kitten" heels, "boyfriend" cardigans and "hobos" (those are purses, apparently) and all go in and out of style. I also know that women's sizing structure makes absolutely no sense! For men, we wear a certain size because that's how many inches around our waists are. No guessing. No disputing sizes and saying "Well, I'm at 6 here, but I'm a 4 there so I shop there more often!" like certain women's outlets are prone to cause.
While most men's fashions are pretty straightforward I was confused by Levi's latest style called the "Ex-Girlfriend" Jean. Despite having the word "girl" in the title these new tight and stretchy jeans are meant for the man in your life. Well, man that was in your life, I guess. Levi's says these jeans pay tribute to a man's ex who had great style and describes them as having a "a fit that's super-snug all over, an update of the five-pocket classic that's as skinny as it gets." Hmm.
Most men want to wear clothes that are comfortable, affordable and make them look good without having to try too hard. And while fitted styles are becoming more of the norm than ever I might have to draw the line at pants that basically seem like a male version of jeggings. (Although Conan O'Brien sported them well.)
Ex-girlfriend jeans aren't the first beauty and style item to find inspiration from a former fling. Actress Kate Walsh just released her own fragrance called Boyfriend thought up by the idea of wanting to smell like an ex. But where does one draw the line between smelling like an old flame and actually wearing his or her clothes? Perhaps she's your ex-girlfriend because you look better in her skinny jeans than she does
