The Hangover was a huge sleeper hit last year, thanks to its hilariously inappropriate humor. Of course, the filmmakers have to top themselves for the sequel -- so how could they possibly make The Hangover 2 even more offensive? For starters, how about a cameo from Hollywood pariah Mel Gibson?
Gibson, 54, will supposedly be playing a Bangkok tattoo artist in the upcoming comedy. This wouldn't be big news, except that the fallout from Gibson's public battle with Oksana Grigorieva had a lot of people wondering if he'd ever work again. Even Gibson's own agent dumped him after those incriminating audio tapes came to light.
So why would Gibson pick a politically uncorrect comedy for his film comeback? Perhaps because Mike Tyson, another celeb with image troubles, credits his cameo appearance in The Hangover with reviving his career. Not only did the movie help restore Tyson's celebrity cache after a series of drug-related incidents, but its success inspired Tyson to get clean.
"(The movie) started me on a good path to a healthy life," Tyson told the press.
Tyson's experience sounds like an atypical result; most actors don't decide to stop using drugs after filming a 5-minute scene in a comedy. Gibson is more likely hoping that he can get through his current PR crisis by making fun of himself. But is it too soon? The custody battle between Gibson and his ex is still pretty ugly, and plenty of fans were understandably turned off by the racist, sexist language on the leaked tapes (though he still has a loyal supporter in pal Jodie Foster who told Extra that Gibson is "truly the most-loved man in the film business.")
The movie is scheduled for next fourth of July weekend. Is that enough time for us to forget about all the things we heard Mel Gibson say? It doesn't seem so far away -- and right now, nobody's laughing.
