Last week, fans of The X Factor were eagerly waiting to find out which contestants landed in the Top 16. But unfortunately, rainy weather in Detroit caused a baseball postseason delay and Fox's hit show was bumped out of its timeslot.
But now the wait is over, as the 16 finalists were finally revealed on last night's episode. And at this point, whether or not they win, they'll perform for thousands of TV viewers on the first live show, some of whom are no doubt record execs. Not a bad gig!
Last week, judges/mentors L.A. Reid and Britney Spears made their selections, and on Tuesday Demi Lovato and Simon Cowell made their final cuts.
As usual, there were tons of tears and tough decisions, and Cowell racheted up the drama (as only he can). "He just got rid of somebody who could be a Kelly Clarkson or a Carrie Underwood," he said about Reid's decision to jettison Tara Simon, a contestant who wasn't even a fan favorite. "That's his decision to live with." (Yeah, the guy's probably losing lots of sleep over that one.) But on a happier note, here are the chosen ones:
Team Britney (teens): Carly Rose Sonenclar, Diamond White, Arin Ray and Beatrice Miller.
Best shot at winning: This is a close category, but Carly Rose might have an edge. Guest mentor will.i.am was especially impressed. "She's like a little caterpillar, and then you think she's going to turn into a butterfly?" he said. "Dragon! Scorching the town."
Team Reid (25 and ups): David Correy, Jason Brock, Tate Stevens and Vino Alan.
Best shot at winning? Not only did David Correy's vocals give Reid "chill bumps," but producers can play up his emotional personal story. Due to his performance on the show, he's now reconnected with his long lost birth mother.
Team Demi (young adults): CeCe Frey, Jennel Garcia, Willie Jones and Paige Thomas.
Best shot at winning? Keep an eye on 18-year-old Garcia. She's petite and soft-spoken, but the judges repeatedly call her performances "spicy" and "sensual." At one point after she sang, Lovato cried, "Crazy sex appeal!"
Team Simon (groups): Emblem3, LYLAS, LYRIC 145 and Sister C.
Best shot at winning? LYLAS, a girl group of solo contestants who were put together on the show, have managed to wow both Reid and the jaded Cowell. And they've already amassed tons of fans.
The live performances are set to begin on Nov. 1, when new cohosts Mario Lopez and Khloe Kardashian will join the show. But Fox's Major League Baseball broadcasts could shuffle the schedule once again. The World Series starts Oct. 24, and could potentially end as soon as Oct. 28.
