More than 890,000 pounds of ground beef imported into the U.S. from Canadian company XL Foods has been recalled for E. coli. According to Food Safety News, the meat was shipped to many stores in several states, including Albertsons (all locations in Oregon and Washington state, as well as three stores in Idaho), FoodsCo (California), Safeway (Washington and Oregon), and Food4Less, Jay C, Kroger and Safeway. The full list of recalled products and locations is available here.
This recall is notable because it is so large and slow-moving. Food Safety News reports that E. coli was detected on August 30, but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency did not inspect the plant until September 13, issuing a recall on September 16.
