When strands are dropping right and left, it can feel like you're the only new mama who's dealing with this much hair loss. Relax, it happens to almost everyone. While some lucky souls barely realize they're shedding, others spend weeks finding clumps of hair at the bottom of the shower or buried in baby's folds, obsessing over thinning spots, and trying to shake the nagging feeling that they're a few patches away from Mr. Clean territory. Both scenarios are completely normal.
"Typical hair loss for anyone not experiencing excessive shedding is around 100 to 150 hairs a day," Dr. Kyei says. "When the postpartum phase occurs, more hair goes into the shedding phase. A woman will experience in excess of that 150 hairs -- it could be double, triple, quadruple. Everyone is different."
