You 'Can' Do it! Making Jellies, Jams, Preserves and More

There's no better time to put up a few jars of homemade jelly or jam, hence National Can-it-Forward Day on August 13. Read on for more details and some recipe inspiration

Whether you're overloaded by an overproductive garden or just want to enjoy a taste of summer when there's snow on the ground, canning is a fun way to make the most of all of the great produce in season now.

With that in mind, Ball, the maker of home canning products, has designated August 13 National Can-it-Forward Day to encourage more people to try their hand at making homemade jams, jellies, preserves, pickles and more. (Of course you don't need an official holiday to do canning projects -- but it might provide the push to get started if you haven't already.)

Try your hand at a small-batch recipe or throw a canning party and get your friends and family involved. With a little help, you could have stocked shelves to last you through the rest of the year!

If you're new to canning, Ball has some tips and videos as well as an easy salsa recipe. Ball also offers a very handy pectin calculator if you're unsure of how much to add.
