Hanging Out in a Group of Friends Makes You Look Hotter

New research shows that traveling in a pack can make you all appear more attractive

The next time you’re in need of a quick confidence boost or hoping to grab a guy’s attention, just latch on to a group of people.

Experts from the University of California, San Diego have discovered that our decent looks, along with our abnormalities and imperfections, tend to balance out -- if not improve -- when we’re standing side-by-side with others of the same sex. According to The Atlantic, UCSD psychology grad student Drew Walker summed it up like this: “Average faces are more attractive, likely due to the averaging out of unattractive idiosyncrasies."

Walker and fellow study author Edward Vul performed five experiments showing participants a number of pictures, including photos of people standing alone, group shots and even collages of individuals. In all five experiments, both the men and women surrounded in a group were rated as more attractive.

This research, published in the journal Psychological Science, confirms a previous theory known as the “cheerleader effect” that Walker explained as “The notion that people are more attractive when in a group.” The Urban Dictionary is a little more detailed in defining the cheerleader effect: “It's when you see a group of girls or guys and they look hot, but when you see each person individually they are NOT…"

Not only is this information entertaining, it’s also helpful. For one thing, anyone who is uncomfortable standing alone at a bar or party can rejoice in the fact that they enjoy the company of others. It also reminds us that there is really in strength in numbers.

That being said, I don’t have any plans to stand next to Sofia Vergara any time soon.
