chime in nowThe problem: You’re now in charge of divvying up assignments and writing performance reviews for the friends you used to commiserate with. How do you become the boss without being hated?
The solution: Often, former coworkers don’t acknowledge that you’re now the boss, says Williams. You’ll have to assert it. For example, when a deadline looms you need not only to turn down the after-work invite, but inform the crew that they need to put in overtime, too. You can continue friendships, but set up professional boundaries. Tell your friend that you are dying to know how her date went, but ask if you can you dish about it during happy hour. And accept that no matter what you do, some relationships will change in order for you to succeed at your new job.
