Your Baby at 8 Months

Thinking Skills

  • Explores the idea that an object always remains the same. Repeatedly explores the size, texture, firmness, shape, taste, sound, smell and weight of an object.
  • Explores the concept of cause and effect -- that when he performs an action, it causes the same effect repeatedly. When he manipulates a busy-box toy, each hand movement causes an effect, such as a noise or reflection of his face in a mirror.
  • Notices objects with his eyes and points to things he wants.
  • Pays greater attention to the details in his world.
  • Has the mental model of a human face in his mind and studies everyone's face for com-parison and contrast.
  • Continues babbling dialogue, expecting verbal answers from other people. May imitate noises for toys, like "brrr" for a car.
  • Enjoys listening to simple books being read to him. Enjoys singing and simple hand games like Pat-a-Cake, This Little Piggy or How Big Is Baby?
  • Develops favorite music among the regular songs he hears.
  • Can identify household and outdoor sounds.
  • Imitates rhythmic banging sounds.

Emotional Development

  • Expresses separation anxiety by becoming nervous, bashful, turning away, whining and crying around unfamiliar people.
  • Likes to be near her parents.
  • Smiles at and tries to kiss her image in the mirror.
  • Expresses emotions of anger and frustration. Changes emotions easily - from laughing to crying, for example.
  • Has no awareness of danger to herself or her surroundings as she constantly explores the world around her.
  • May have trouble sleeping at night as she awakes to practice crawling and standing in crib. Offer reassurance: "It's time to sleep now." (Remove all toys except a baby mirror to make crib a place for sleep, not play.)
