When you imagine seeing your baby for the first time, you probably picture your newborn with smooth skin and a round, cherubic little face, like you've seen in movies or on TV. But many parents could agree that, at first, their baby looked more like a creature from Aliens. "Babies can look funny right after delivery," says Dr. Macones. "First, because they've been in fluid for nine months, their skin is wrinkled, just like when you're in the pool for a while. Also, the baby's head gets squished through the birth canal, so he can have a cone head. This gets better within a day, but it can catch people off guard." Plenty of newborns are covered in meconium (your baby's first poop), amniotic fluid and blood before they're cleaned off, and they can have jaundice (which causes yellowing of the skin) and flaky skin that's bluish or red, and pimples, too.
