"The Secret Mission"
I will always remember with a smile and a tug at my heart the best kiss I ever had -- and needed! My boyfriend John and I had been dating for six months and things were really starting to heat up, both emotionally and physically. Before dating John, I had been in an abusive marriage that left me physically and mentally scared. John never gave up on me, though. After presenting me with dozens of red roses, sending me sentimental cards and offering much heartfelt support, I proposed to him! He told me that he would give me the answer later on that evening. First he had to meet up with a few of his friends. He told me to meet him at the local tavern around 9pm and he would tell me his answer. Needless to say, I was miffed thinking that he had to talk it over with his friends first, especially since we were both in our late thirties!
My best friend and I went to the tavern around 9:30 (I wanted him to have to wait), but John wasn't there. Ten o'clock came and went, then 10:30. At this point, I was literally in tears. Finally, at around 11, John and two of his friends came in the door wearing beat-up old coveralls, with glitter all over their faces. They said they had been on a "secret mission." Several patrons at the tavern were staring out the window laughing, smiling and snickering. John wrapped his big arms around me, gave me a big, wet, lingering kiss and walked me out the door. Parked in the lot was his truck with a huge billboard attached to it. There were big, bright, red and blue hearts everywhere, with the words: "John will love Beverly for forever and three blankets."
