Your Brain (Plus) Diets (Equals) A Bigger Ass

Today’s blog comes courtesy of life coach Jen Trinque, of http://recipesforcreativity.wordpress.com:

Reach your ideal size in 8 days! Easy weight loss that guarantees you’ll have a butt like a 12-year-old boy without lifting a pinkie!

Ha! Diet programs, books, and DVDs may promise quick, painless and miraculous results in their screaming headlines, but have you ever noticed that the fine print always says “Results not typical”?

Want to know why?

Because nearly every diet and exercise plan out there neglects the most important weight-loss tool you have: Your mind.

We are biologically programmed not to lose weight. The human race has survived famines specifically because our bodies are so damn good at conserving fuel. In fact, when we start cutting off our food supply we are not only physically hungry, but our brains signal that we should be afraid, because obviously we’re living in a scary time where no food is available. It does not realize there is a 24/7 all-you-can-eat donut bar within walking distance of your apartment. When we get scared we get stressed, and you know what this triggers: The need to break our carrots and cabbage RIGHT NOW.

Want more proof that drastically cutting calories is really bad for your waistline and your brain? Check out Ancel Key’s Semi-Starvation Study. Sure, these healthy, fit male subjects had their total calories cut in half, which might be slightly more aggressive than many diet plans (but not all), but the results were astounding: the once-healthy men became obsessed with food, talking and thinking about it all the time, hoarding it, stealing it, and of course, binge-eating it. Sound familiar?

Before you jump off a bridge, throw away your skinny jeans, or cry yourself through the contents of your fridge, relax. Seriously, that’s how you’re going to successfully and permanently lose weight. By relaxing, body, mind and spirit. I know you really want to look hot at your high school reunion tomorrow night, your ex-husband’s wedding in two weeks, and at the family potluck at the end of the month, but trying to force your mind (and body) into quick weight loss is not the way to go. However, if you’re willing to follow a few simple steps, there is a way to reach your goals.

Practice relaxation techniques. Pick a time when you’ve completed a meal. Sit down in a quiet spot and spend about ten minutes breathing deeply and telling yourself something kind, like, “it’s okay to relax right now”, “I’ll always take good care of you”, or “I am lovable just the way I am”. When you are completely relaxed, get in touch with how your body feels. Feel both your physical and emotional pains. Look at them, especially your emotional hurts. Jot them down to explore later. Complete this exercise with some deep breaths and let yourself know you’re wonderful and lovable just the way you are.

Give up giving up (your favorite foods). You’ve probably heard this before: if you completely cut yourself off from your favorite foods, it’s going to end up kicking you in your (possibly plump) ass. Stop it. Losing weight permanently means finding a happy balance, and I don’t know anyone who has a happy balance that only includes brown rice and steamed vegetables.

Start filling your life with things you love that don’t involve food. When you’re really ready to lose weight, you are going to have to (slowly) lower your food intake. To make this stick, it is absolutely essential that you fill your life with other wonderful activities. Start a joy list: write down your favorite things to do that don’t involve food, like taking a walk, playing with your dog, going to a concert, or watching the sunset. The more filled with joy your life is, the less likely you are to turn to food for comfort.

You can do this, but it takes time and lots and lots of love for yourself. Stop and think about the moment you’re in right now. You might not be in a size two jeans, but you’re breathing, living, and everything is perfect.
