On the 4th of July, Real Housewife of Orange County, Alexis Bellino’s stroller rolled into a pool with her 2-1/2-year-old twin daughters on board. Luckily, there was a quick response and everyone was fine, but many people across the internet are incensed, calling her irresponsible and negligent. The truth is, regardless of what you think of Bellino, accidents like this can happen in the blink of an eye. As parents, we all have those moments -- the ones we look back on and think, "Wow, that happened so fast!" Usually, they're little things; one minute you're walking with your child and you notice his shoe is untied, the next he’s tripped over a crack in the sidewalk and broken an arm.
One of my scariest and most self loathing moments was when my son was about 6 months old. I accidentally locked him in my car. Luckily it was running, so I didn’t have to worry about dangerous summer heat, but he was hysterical and the window between us felt more like a wall of guilt that I was tempted to shatter with a towel wrapped around my elbow, MacGyver-style. Local police came by and found my SUV to be impenetrable, and they had to call in a bomb squad to dismantle my locking system. No joke. As four men, dressed in full bomb squad attire worked to finally release my locks, I loudly sang "Old MacDonald" through the closed window trying to assuage my son and lull him to sleep. By the time I was done “oinking,” the car was opened and I vowed never to lock my doors again. Okay, I told you mine –- you tell me yours. This is your chance to confess your worst parenting moments. No judgments!
