“Regular exposure to sunlight helps keep your body’s internal clock functioning normally, including the release of hormones that affect mood,” says Erik Nelson, M.D., an associate professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati. In fact, research at Montreal’s McGill University found that even brief bouts of bright-light exposure can boost mood. No need to sunbathe; experts say a daily 15 to 20 minute sunny stroll is enough to get the benefit.
