If you have an immediate family member (a parent or sibling) who has suffered from depression, your risk of following in their footsteps is three times higher than it is for someone who doesn’t have such a family history, notes Kenneth Kendler, M.D., professor of psychiatry at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. His advice: If you experience depressed mood along with other problems such as trouble sleeping and concentrating, change of appetite, feelings of guilt and loss of interest in things you usually enjoy, see your doctor.
