Samantha Lee is one of those moms who makes everyday tasks seem so effortless, like turning supper into masterpiece dinner theater. The Malaysian mom of two daughters takes her kids' meals and less-than-picturesque ingredients and turns them into amazing art pieces that are almost too pretty to eat!
She started making the culinary creations several years ago in an attempt to encourage her then-young daughter to eat independently while she was pregnant with the girl's baby sister. Now, her pieces inspire hoards when she posts them to her popular social media channels. (Her Instagram feed currently has more than 325,000 followers and counting.)
She chatted with us via email about her inspirations, her kids, her tips and her biggest triumph in the kitchen:
Where do you find your inspiration?
I look for cute images or a topic to start with every morning. Then, I sketch the ideas. Sketching the creations brings more inspiration; the more I sketch, the more ideas I will get. Also, sketching the ideas out allows me to be more organized and waste less when I'm making the food.
What do your kids think of your projects?
My kids are excited [about] all my projects. They tell each other the stories [about what's going on in the scenes] on the plates.
What's your favorite project you ever did?
My favorite would be the Harry Potter food art. I love it because it has art on and off the plate.
What advice would you give other people who want to get more arty and creative with their food for their families?
Always prepare healthy ingredients for food art. Simplify the design so you don't have to spend hours in the kitchen.
