Comedian and Moesha star Yvette Wilson passed away Thursday after a long battle with cervical cancer and kidney disease, NewsOne.com reports. She was 48.
In recent days, Wilson's Moesha costar Shar Jackson had been asking fans for prayers in Wilson's medical struggle. Then on Thursday evening, she broke the sad news of Wilson's death with this tweet: "I wanna thank all my tweeties for their prayers but god has chosen to take my sister Yvette home."
According to NewsOne.com, which had been following Wilson's ongoing struggle with the cancer and kidney problems, the actress needed a kidney transplant. And so, with help from friend Jeffrey Pittle, she created a website so fans could donate money to help her pay for her soaring medical costs. The fundraiser had only reached 54 percent of its goal when it ended on June 9.
Wilson was best known for playing Andell Wilkerson opposite Brandy Norwood's titular character on the UPN show Moesha. Wilson went on to star in the Moesha spin-off The Parkers with Monique, and also had roles in House Party 2, House Part 3 and Friday.
Her friends and fans took to Twitter following the announcement of her death to express their condolences and well wishes for her family.
"#RIPYVETTEWILSON," Gabrielle Union tweeted. "Great actress from 'Moesha' & 'The Parkers' She was truly beautiful inside & out. You will be missed. Love & Light"
Questlove of The Roots also said goodbye to the actress via Twitter. "One love to Yvette Wilson. you're on a higher plane now," he tweeted. "Sad that you will now really never ever ever ever eva–come around here no mo. #RIP."
