The 24-year-old High School Musical star was at The Lorax premiere on Feb. 20 when he reached into his pocket to and gave his publicist some items. A video of the incident shows what appears to be a prophylactic fluttering to the ground, and an embarrassed Efron quickly picking it up (as onlookers laugh). But it wasn't until Efron's Today show interview with Matt Lauer Thursday morning that the actor admitted exactly what he dropped. Watch the amusing interview below!
"I never really had a pocket-checking policy prior to going on to the red carpet before, but now we fully instated one," Efron joked after Lauer mentioned that Zac dropped "something." It's clear that the conversation was awkward for both Efron and Lauer, especially since Lauer had a surprisingly difficult time asking Efron: "Was it a... condom?"
Efron told him it was, but called him out for not being able to say the word "condom," while Lauer busted Efron's chops for blushing.
But it turns out that Lauer thinks that showing he has a condom at least offers the right lesson for kids.
"I think it gives you credit," Lauer said of the fact that Efron uses protection. "I mean, better to be safe than sorry, right?"
"Absolutely," Efron agreed. "It's a great message to add to the many great messages in the film."
