The actress, 32, and the 36-year-old Death Cab for Cutie frontman's divorce was finalized on Dec. 12, according to court documents filed in Los Angeles Superior Court.
People reports that the documents state the cause of divorce as: "Unhappy and irreconcilable differences have arisen between the parties, which have caused the irremediable breakdown of their marriage. There is no possibility that counseling … or mediation could save the marriage."
Neither Deschanel nor Gibbard, who released Former Lives -- his first solo album -- this year, has spoken out about the split, which was made official in Oct. 2011. But shortly after filing for divorce last December, the New Girl star did tell People that things between she and Gibbard were amicable.
"We're friendly. It's all fine," she said in 2011.
Gibbard and Deschanel started dating in 2008 and were married near Seattle, Wash. (he is a Washington state native) in Sept. 2009.
"I was just awestruck that she was even talking to me. I'd seen her movies and obviously I thought she was very beautiful," Gibbard said in a Sept. 2011 magazine profile of his former wife.
The darling couple of indie rock split only two years later.
Deschanel, for her part, already has a new beau. She has been dating screenwriter Jamie Linden (10 Years, Dear John, We Are Marshall) for more than six months.
"Jamie's a really nice guy," a source told Us Weekly earlier this year. "He's funny, and little geeky...he's into her!"
